Laphroaig Cairdeas 2013 (Portwood) Review

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2013 (Portwood) I was lucky enough to manage to get a bottle of the Laphroaig Cairdeas 2013 (Portwood) before it sold out (within 3 hours) on the Laphroaig Shop.

Cairdeas (Gaelic for Friendship) is the annual release for Feis Ile from Laphroaig and this year it has been matured in bourbon casks for 8 years before being "finished" in port pipes for 14 months giving the whisky a fantastic pink hue.

A mix of cigar ash, bbq meats and plum jam this is a cracking dram and one which will be in demand as the investors begin reselling them or auctioning them off.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

The initial nose on this is vey smoky, and by that i mean real smoke, cigar smoke and ash not the typical medicinal anaesthetic that i get from Laphoaig, it then gets very bbq meat like, then there's a sweetness from dark plum skin and sugary mixed fruit jam, as you sniff further into the glass it becomes sweeter and sweeter.

Palate

powerful smoke and cigar ash come through first followed by umbongo sweetness and plum skin.

Finish

sweet tropical fruits and edges of cigar smoke.
