Midleton Very Rare Vintage Release 2020 Review

Midleton Very Rare 2020Thank you to Irish Distillers for the invite to the Zoom launch of this Midleton Very Rare, the last edition by ex master distiller Brian nation who has now been succeeded by Kevin O'Gorman.

This batch features more refill casks and a higher proportion of Pot still whiskey over grain whiskey than previous batches and features whiskey of ages between 13 and 35 years old.

This is a seriously drinkable whiskey, fruity, juicy and seriously delicious, complex, spicy, marzipan. It is let down slightly by the ABV which tames the finish too much in my opinion, and the prce tag of C €180 feels quite a push for such a blend, but there is no taking away how delicious this dram is.

Thanks to Irish Distillers for the official sample pack

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Initial soft tropical fruits, spiced cooked pears, touch of gentle toffee notes and hints of light oak with soft sponge cake, a definite strong marzipan note in here also, very juicy and mouth watering.

Palate

Mouth coating loveliness, initial heat from oak spices with a touch of heat, then a juicy tropical fruit, melon, papaya, soft fruits and again that lovely marzipan note. It changes with every sip going from spicy to fruity, and seriously easy to drink.

Finish

The ABV means the finish here is shortly than it could be, drying, spicy, hints of tropical fruit
