Mackmyra Vintersol 2019 Swedish Single Malt Whisky Review

Mackmyra Vintersol 2019 Swedish Single Malt Whisky This is the Mackmyra Vintersol (Winter Sun) which is matured initially in ex bourbon, Swedish oak and ex sherry barrels before being matured in ex port pipes from the Duoro valley in Portugal, specifically Quinta Do Valado which is one of the oldest port producers in Portugal.

I'm a huge fan of ex port pipe whiskies and so i really was interested when this arrived, port pipe whiskies are some of my all time favourites, although i tend to go for ex bourbon drams.

Juicy fruity and with lots of really nice flavours that i like, including shortbread dipped in milky tea, the port has added a delicious apricot jam note to this and there's a lovely bready note that edges to light toast.

This is right up my street and with a price tag around the £50 mark this is definitely one of those drams i would be happy to have and drink through on any occasion.

Available to buy from specialists if you are quick, such as The Whisky Exchange.

Thanks to Mackmyra for the official sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Buttery, a hint of very buttery shortbread that's been dipped in milky sugary tea, some gentle oak notes, like oak leaf sauce in a nice restaurant, white bread notes, sherbet fizzyness and hints of apricot jam, pink grapefruit and lemon peel, gentle beeswax and a touch of freshly grated ginger.

Palate

Juicy, grated ginger and white grape juice mixed together, white bread again and more of that buttery shortbread, light fresh syrup and that apricot jam once again, spread on lightly toasted white bread.

Finish

Juicy, fruity, apricot jam and shortbread
