Loch Lomond The Open Course Collection Royal Portrush 19 Year Old Review

Loch Lomond The Open Course Collection Royal Portrush 19 Year Old This Loch Lomond The Open Course Collection Royal Portrush 19 years has been matured in American Oak, the liquid was then finished in claret casks as an homage to the famous Open trophy, and as a result has developed a stunning rose colour.

I've been really impressed with the liquid from Loch Lomond distillery recently, it is versatile and full of flavour. This dram having been finished in Claret Red Wine did have me concerned due to my issues with red wine but let's give it a go anyway.

Massive fruity, juicy, tasty whisky, there's some sugary sweet notes, some caramelised pineapples and butterscotch notes and red liquorice laces. A hint of heat on the palate and lots of butterscotch again, hugely tasty.

Available at specialist retailers including The Whisky Shop.

Many Thanks to Ibon at Loch Lomond Distillers for the Tour and sampling.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Initially there is a sugary sweet element with a hint of citrus notes, almost like lemon zest has been infused in light caster sugar for a number of weeks, then some caramelised pineapples, with a hint of butterscotch caramel notes, a touch of red liquorice laces and a splash of those Haribo love heart sweets.

Palate

Theres a splash of heat in here first, almost a little touch of wasabi heat, then those caramelised pineapples and butterscotch again, red liquorice laces again and maybe some liquorice wheels also as it sits on the palate.

Finish

Liquorice, some gentle wasabi heat again and butterscotch.
