Speyside 15 Year Old – Single Minded (Douglas Laing) Review

Speyside 15 Year Old – Single Minded (Douglas Laing) The Douglas Laing and Co Single minded range of Single Malts from unnamed distilleries are genuinely great value for money and its always good to try a whisky just for the sake of it being a whisky and not because it is a specific distillery.

This bottling is from a secret Speyside distillery, now we could probably all take a guess as there is a particularly famous distillery in this region that does not like to be named but it could be from any other Speyside distillery.

The colour and nose have my head all confused as there are lots of notes that I could describe more as ex bourbon than ex american oak so although there are ex sherry notes I think this has been american oak sherry casks.

Lots of melon skin, tropical fruit salad, leather and sugar, what a thick tasty mouthfeel and such an easy to drink dram, this is a proper session dram, one I will be making sure I keep a bottle in the house of.

You can pick up a bottle of this from specialists like Master of Malt for under £50 which for a 15 Year Old Single Malt is good value.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

There is an initial note of honeydew melon skin, and the innards, including seeds, of a Galia melon, sweet dried apricots and the juice from a can of tinned pear halves, light demerera sugar sweetness then tropical fruit salad, a hint of victoria sponge in the background.

Palate

Much richer than the nose, mixed fruit cake spices coming through, then a hint of old used leather, touches of the honeydew melon skin, and that demerera sugar note is back, the mouthfeel is thick and chewy with hints of cask char

Finish

Cask char, rich cake, mixed tropical fruits, long and enticing
