Balvenie Cuban Selection 14 Year Old Review

Balvenie Cuban Selection 14 Year Old The Balvenie Caribbean cask is one of my favourite Balvenie expressions, the rum cask adds a real sweet rum note to the juicy fruit spirit underneath.

I have this memory from a tasting that David Stewart commented that they actually create their own rum and season their own casks for the Caribbean cask but this one has been finished in Cuban rum casks and was only available across retailers in mainland Europe.

Sweet sugary notes and lots of juicy fruit notes, theres also a touch of floral gums and carnations in this along with a touch of rum babas which is something I normally get in rum casks (surprise surprise) but it is a note I enjoy.

The palate is a little thinner than I would like, but this really is a tasty dram and one I wish was more available in the UK, but I will need to make do with the Caribbean Cask.

Only released originally in Mainland Europe, this is now really only available from whisky auctions, although you might be lucky and find one somewhere.

Thanks to Barry from The Whiskyphiles for the sample

Tasting Notes & Details

This starts off with a delicious tropical fruit salad note, the prickle of pineapple, then some delicious rum babas, with soft sweet demerera sugar, some definite sweetness from this, floral notes that remind me of carnations and floral gums and a light hint of tarte fruits.

Tarte fruits with a splash of sweet demermera sugar and a chinese five spice dusting. The sweetness moves in and out and brings washes of floral gums again, that tropical fruit salad comes in again before more powdery spices and a touch of something slightly soapy

Powerered chinese five spice and a hint of pepper, sweet demerera sugar also
