BenRiach 1992 Cask #979 Port Hogshead Finish Review

BenRiach 1992 Cask #979 Port Hogshead Finish So lets look at this 1992 25 year old Benriach from cask number 979, so for one it's a Benriach, so big tick in the I like them box, then two it's been in a Port Hogshead so even bigger tick as port matured whisky is literally my jam.

Port finished or matured drams are generally first on my list after the purely ex-bourbon matured ones as i tend to like the jam like sweetness from them that is missing from much of the ex sherry whisky that people would traditionally class as sweet.

I'm really quite unsure on this one, the jam note i was expecting is there, but there's also a bit of an odd rubbery/leathery note that i can't quite put my finger on and then lots and lots of hot spices, cinnamon, clove that just tends to overpower the sweetness.

I'd probably say i wasn't keen on this, despite the fact I could go back to it and drink more, it's one of those ones that makes your head work a little as it challenges your senses, I just can't work out if that's a good thing.

I can't find anywhere that still has this in stock, but keep checking the auctions and you might find one.

Thanks to Benriach for the sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Oh now this is interesting, it's a spiced jam, cinnamon and clove spiced bramble jam and some dried malt loaf, there's a slight edge of something that i can't decide if its rubbery or leathery but it's a pleasant sweet note

Initially this is quite hot on the palate cinnamon, clove and nutmeg to the fore, then that bramble jam sweetness and stale malt loaf are back, there's a hint of well done victoria sponge in there also

Hot spiced jam,
