Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Year Old - 2002 Vintage Review

Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Year Old - 2002 Vintage Since 2002 for just one week a year the team at Balvenie run peated barley through the production process and make a peated product. This was the first release from that and is bottled at 14 years old.

Balvenie is a distillery i've really enjoyed some drams from, but is yet again another distillery i really wish would sell some casks to the independents so we could see what it's like at Cask Strength without paying the utterly ridiculous prices of their DCS Compendium which is just ludicrous.

A peated dram from them is definitely interesting, and I'm looking forward to tasting it but they really need to pull out more stops to get more of the experienced drinkers onto it with them.

There are defintiely some interesting notes here, the smoke is light and more smouldering firewood, or overcooked BBQ sausages (yeah the black ones) that hardcore peat smoke, and the palate is sweet and smoky and that tropical fruit sweetness typical of Balvenie runs through it, but it feels a little flat and a little un inspired.

The finish especially is light and flat, and despite being 48.3% ABV it certainly doesn't taste it, as it's a little weak and a little think on the palate and finish. Definitely tasty but i'd love to see a version of this packing some real punch at a higher ABV.

Sold out at whisky specialists as far as I can see but Master of Malt still has some Drinks by the Dram samples left.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

This isn't as peated as I was expecting, it's got a light hint of smouldering firewood that grows as it sits in the glass, with a touch of bonfire candy, with a milk chocolate coating, a hint of manuka honey and some tropical fruit peels (papaya and dragonfruit)

Palate

Manuka honey and the charcoal smokiness on overcooked BBQ'd sausages, with a touch of the meatiness to go with it, milk chocolate covered tropical fruit slices, more smoky sweetness rounds it off

Finish

Sweet, smoky but short and a little flat
