Glen Moray 2007 Port Finish Cask 20050 Fill Your Own Review

Glen Moray 2007 Port Finish Cask 20050 Fill Your Own The Fill Your Own at Glen Moray is a thing of legend around many experienced whisky drinkers, the whisky is always tasty, the price is always fair and the staff at the distillery are always friendly, and that is a winning combination.

This cask, which was available around a year ago, was around 10 and a bit years old and had spent 6 years in ex bourbon casks before being transferred to an ex port pipe for a further 4 years, something seen by the pink hue in the colour.

The standard Glen Moray Classic Port Finish is a firm favourite in this house and I've been through a good many bottles of it, and i tend to love drams that have been in port casks so i was really looking forward to trying this one.

So ex-bourbon drams tend to float my boat more than any other but this is right up my street and the kind of dram I'd happily drink forever. Sweet, fruity, toffee, cask char, jam yum, it's one of those that "nom nom nom" tends to be a good way of describing, I really liked this dram, a lot.

Check out the distillery at Glen Moray for more of their Fill Your Own bottlings.

Thanks to Barry from The WhiskyPhiles for sharing his sample with me.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

It's a lot lighter than i was initially expecting, there's the initial light floral gum / toffee penny notes that i expect from ex bourbon Glen Moray, followed by a whiff of good quality strawberry conserve (not the cheap jam from the supermarket) theres a light element of cask char here also with some crushed redcurrants hiding in the background

Palate

Sweetness and lots of it, but natural fruity sweetness not refined sugar sweetness, strawberry and redcurrant conserve, toffee pennies and more of those floral gums (not lavender or violet though) really quite thick on the palate, and theres a hint of whisky marmalade coming through also

Finish

Thick, mouth coating sweet fruity notes with a hint of cask char and dusty cottage.
