Bowmore 18 Year Old Travel Retail Exclusive Review

Bowmore 18 Year Old Travel Retail Exclusive I think I may have been subconsciously picking unpeated whiskies recently to drink and review so today I picked up a dram I know is usually fairly gently peated to sip and sip and write about so this Bowmore 18 year old, only available at Travel Retail (Duty Free) retailers was my choice for today.

Bowmore is a distillery I really like, there are some really very interesting notes from this distillery throughout the years, with the famous FWP (think Opium perfume or parma Violets) being one that splits opinions from older 1980/1990s bottlings and I was really looking forward to trying this one.

It's much more smoky on the nose than it is on the palate, the palate is lovely and very drinkable, but the finish, despite lasting long, is a little bland and I think the mouthfeel is pretty week for a dram like Bowmore of this age, I'd like to see this presented at 46% just to add an element of oilyness and thickness to it, but even at 43% it's very drinkable and price wise for an 18 year old it's definitely on the reasonable scale.

Tasting Notes & Details

And there is that note I've not had for a while, big meaty smoky notes, home fire peat smoke, burnt ends and slight note of warm rubber, coffee grinds and thick worn leather, a touch of dark chocolate hides in here also and there's a note of foam bananas and flumps (the marshmallow foam things) hovering about in the background also.

Not as smoky on the palate as the nose makes it appear, gentle burnt ends again, some of that peat smoke but it's now like passing a cottage with a peat fire rather than being in the room, foam bananas again, and those flumps, with a chocolate coating, cheap chocolate though (you know those little shiny cups filled with chocolate) and a touch of worn leather again

Quite sweet on the palate, leaves a lovely sweet smoky, banana aftertaste for while.
