Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Old Particular Cask 12545 (Douglas Laing) Review

Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Old Particular Cask 12545 (Douglas Laing) The standard Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old bottling ( review.php?articleid=1200 ) was one of the first whiskies I enjoyed as I begun my journey into whisky in my late teens and early twenties, with a nose that was all chocolate and would make you instantly think Speyside, this ex bourbon single cask variant i am sure will hold something completely different.

When i first poured and sniffed this i really wasn't sure, it was pretty sour, a note i don't really like, but given a few moments to sit and mellow it has softened out and sweetened and become really rather enticing on the nose.

A complex mix on the palate of fruity notes, creamy vanilla and a slight heat as it swooshes around your palate.

This is a really lovely dram, one i didn't think I'd like after a sniff 5 seconds after pouring it, but that I loved a minute later, take your time with this one and enjoy all the notes it gives. This reminds why I like Bunnahabhain 12 so much and why I need to revisit it soon.

Thanks to Douglas Laing for the official sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Sour apples first, crab apples and biting into a bramley cooking apple, a touch of Soor Ploom sweets, gently dustiness and freshly made vanilla cream, the apples become a little sweeter as it sits in the glass, and the dustiness (old mansion dusty) comes in as a wave of the apple notes. Initially I wasn't sure but it settles nicely with time in the glass.

Quite tame and fresh initially on the palate, drumstick squashie sweets, soor plooms without the sour note, dusty fresh apples again, a slight acetone and heat as it sits on the palate, the vanilla cream again also.

Fresh, hints of acetone and heat and that vanilla cream
