Glengoyne Balbaina Review

Glengoyne Balbaina Another from the Travel Retail exclusive range from Glengoyne this is the Balbaina, with first fill hand selected European oak casks at it's heart I'm expecting a lot of dried fruit character from this dram.

I've enjoyed a number of Glengoyne sherry matured drams recently, finding that the quality of the liquid and the casks means i'm not being subjected to the horrendous rubber i get from many others and today i'm trying another, from their Global Travel Retail range and actually quite excited to do so.

The nose is quite light with lots of raisins, sultanas and apricot, then a yeasty note and milk chocolate, it sounds odd but it works and entices you in well. The palate packs a punch with clove and nutmeg coming in strong with those fruits and yeasty notes backing it up.

This is the type of sherried dram i enjoy, and reminds me why i should continue to drink them, even if i do still come across some oddball rubbery ones occasionally.

Thanks to Glengoyne for the official sample

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

And yes thats the notes i was expecting, raisins, sultanas and dried apricots are the first notes i get from this, then a touch of orange zest, there's a little yeasty note, just after you start mixing it before adding to bread, a little hint of milk chocolate and a touch of acetone if left in the glass for a while

Palate

Considering the tame nose, this is a complete polar opposite, its hard hitting with cloves and nutmeg coming across the palate first before vanilla and orange infused demerera sugar, dates and apricots and a hint of dried banana, that yeasty note again

Finish

Sweet and spicy, that infused sugar and the clove and nutmeg sit around for a while.
