Benromach Heritage 1977 Vintage Cask no. 1269 Review

Benromach 1977 Vintage Cask no. 1269 A single cask of Benromach from 1977, that's almost as old as me, is certainly something I'm very interested in trying, especially as some of the others from this time have been outstanding and the Benromach 1973 even made it onto my top 5 drams of 2016.

Benromach is a distillery i really enjoy spending time with; their 15 year old and 100 proof 10 year old are both staples that i really enjoy sipping on in the house.

This is seriously tasty, theres definite huge notes of baked orchard fruits with pear tarte tartin coming through really strong. This is fairly light on the palate but full of complexity and flavour, the smoke/char is there on the palate and much stronger than the nose but it doesn't overpower and is hugely tasty and moreish.

This might push the budget of many a whisky drinker but it's an utterly fabulous dram, and a great experience. This might even make the top 5 of 2019 list!

Check with your local whisky specialist on the availability of this dram.

Thanks to Benromach for the official sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Baked orchard fruits are the first things to fill my nostrils, pear tarte tartin with slightly undercooked doughy pastry and light caramel, a little meaty element coming through with some burnt ends adding a little light smoke/char to the mix. The pear goes more pear drops, almost artificial pear note, with vanilla cream and menthol as it sits on the glass.

Theres an initial smoky/char note that is way stronger than you would expect from the nose, then ther sweet orchard fruits are back, pears for sure but some golden delicious crunchy apples in here also, some crunchy sugar shards, caramel sauce and touch of scone mixture, some hubba bubba chewing gum in here also

Hubba bubba gum and lightly smoked scones.
