Auchentoshan 1998 (18 Year Old) The Library Collection (Edinburgh Whisky) Review

Auchentoshan 1998 (18 Year Old) The Library Collection (Edinburgh Whisky Ltd) There are a number of things that make me look through the back log of drams and a discussion on twitter about Auchentoshan is what led me to this one. Bottled by independent bottlers Edinburgh Whisky Ltd this single cask has been bottled at 46%.

With the propensity of most distilleries, including Auchentoshan, finishing or maturing almost everything in ex-sherry or ex-wine casks it's lovely to see some ex-bourbon that lets the distillery character shine properly.

This is exactly the type of dram i enjoy, sweet(ish) with lots of ex bourbon character and something interesting and intriguing on the palate. It might not always be to my taste but it's always a lot more interesting than ex sherry.

Not available anywhere that i can find anymore, this was bottled a few years back. Keep an eye out for more from their range though

Tasting Notes & Details

That classic ex bourbon nose from Auchentoshan, vanilla essence and lemon zest, with a twist of cask char. Lemon sherbet, theres a light malty note that reminds me of those malted belt sweets you used to get, but it is edging towards ovaltine also

Oh now thats an interesting palate, caramelised white chocolate, vanilla essence and some light cask char first, then some warm slightly over cooked cheese scones, with a slight mild cheddar note in here also, slightly tarte almost astringent, but very interesting.

Warm cheddar scones, more of the caramelised white chocolate and that cask char again
