Deanston 2008 Brandy Cask Finish Review

Deanston 2008 Brandy Cask Finish There are a number of distilleries that i really enjoy the whisky from but i tend to, for some reason, either not see when looking at lists in bars etc, or when hunting for samples and Deanston is one of them, and thats despite the fact i'm actually a huge fan of the whisky.

I think this is also the first time i've ever seen a Brandy cask finish on a whisky also, this really does appear to such an interesting dram.

A first sniff and i do everything i can to not say this smells like Brandy Butter, but there is a definite creamy, buttery note along with sweet sugary butterscotch and its really really interesting.

The palate is almost identical to the nose, filled with soft butterscotchy sugary notes and those cookies and cream, but the citrus adds a different element and really makes it complex and interesting. This has made me want to spend more time with Deanston and hunt out some brandy and brandy cask finishes.

Available to buy from specialists like Master of Malt

Thanks to Barry from The Whiskphiles who shared his sample with me.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Sniffed blind i'd have said this was an ex-bourbon cask with lots of cask char and sweetness, very sugary, caramelised muscovado sugar as it has gone a little butterscotch like, there's also a little cookies and cream element to this and a touch of citrus peel, interesting for sure

Palate

The palate here is quite interesting, that cookies and cream, lots of vanilla and buttery, creamy notes is there for sure, again theres a note that reminds me very much of cask char, and that butterscotch like sugar note again. The citrus fruits are there and mix with a hint of chinese 5 spice at the end of the palate.

Finish

Sweet butterscotchy sugar, chinese 5 spice and more cookies, ongoing warming notes
