Caol Ila / Gordon & MacPhail

Caol Ila 2003 Private Collection Sassicaia Finish (Gordon and MacPhail) Review

Caol Ila 2003 Private Collection Sassicaia Finish (Gordon and MacPhail) This is a really interesting one, a 2003 vintage Caol Ila which was matured for 9 years or so in ex bourbon then finished for 33 years in a super tuscan Sassicaia cask.

The official notes say smoke mixes with summer berries and chocolate, whats not to like.

Oh my this is delicious stuff fruity and smoky hugely tasty and complex the Sassicaia has added a juicy fruity tasty element to this caol ila ... delicious stuff and I want another bottle now

Seems to be sold out everywhere but keep trying specialists The Whisky Exchange for others in this range.

Tasting Notes & Details

There's that initial caol ila ashy chalky smoky note that I was expecting but it's wrapped in a carpet (or Turkish rug - a little dusty) with blackcurrant jam, chalky edinburgh rock and yellow jelly babies (powdery and sweet), BBQ redcurrants and the powder from a tin of travel sweets, slight hint of a well fired roll

Huge mouthfeel this does actually feel like you're eating, massive hints of fruity berries and jelly babies that have been BBQd until crispy and charred (until flavour arrives as my chef friend would say) redcurrants and sticky BBQ ribs really meaty and sweet

Sweet but ongoing smokiness
