Bunnahabhain / Wemyss Malts

Wemyss Malts Smouldering Hickory Review

Wemyss Malts Smouldering Hickory This single cask 1997 vintage from Bunnahabhain Distillery and bottled by Wemyss was exclusively available from the new Kingsbarns Distillery when it opened in 2014.

Kindly provided as a sample by JJ from Whisky Rover this is a really interesting dram.

Notes of smoke, but sweet honey roast vegetable smoke, mix with doughy sweet notes of pastry and undercooked dough, this is a tasty dram and one i wish i'd discovered earlier when it was still available.

Seems to only be available at auction now, although there are other bottles now available exclusively for visitors to Kingsbarns Distillery.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Oh that's interesting, lots of gentle sweet smoke, it's almost sweet, fruity or even sweet vegetables, like roasted beetroot and parsnips, with charred but honey roasted skins, a hint of blueberry muffin tart and doughy in here too.

Palate

Sweet initially then a smoked, BBQd root vegetable note again, sweet and bitter, parsnips sweet potato and bitter almost burnt edges, tasty and interesting.

Finish

Almost a menthol like smoke, that lingers, goes fruity and seems to clear the sinuses
