BenRiach 22 Year Old Moscatel Wood Finish Review

BenRiach 22 Year Old Moscatel Wood Finish I generally always like whisky that's been matured in sweet wine casks so a Benriach, which is generally always great, finished in Moscatel, is an attractive proposition.

I'm not 100% certain what casks were used before but there's a lot of Sherry like notes in here, which may simply come from the finish or may be from the previous cask. A slight hint of rubber on the nose but not enough to put me off, then lots of fruit, spice and chocolate, yummy stuff.

A huge, sherry like finish rounds this off and it's a dram i could happily sit and sip on many a winters night.

Available to buy from Specialists like Master of Malt.

Thanks to Benriach for the official sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Quite rich and fruity, lots of oak and wood notes, spicy, lots of fruit cake but with a seriously sweet cinnamon sugar type element, stewed figs with caramelised Demerara sugar, a hint of rubber too.

Palate

Sweet, sugary, candela sugar substitute, dried fruit cake, milk chocolate sauce with candied cranberries and died strawberries, really mouthwatering

Finish

Huge, growing, sweetness and Sherry cask like sweetness.
