Benrinnes / Scotch Malt Whisky Society

SMWS 36.103 Ivory Keys Review

smws This Scotch Malt Whisky Society 36.103 Ivory Keys is one of those bogey distilleries where i've had issues in the past, with heavily sherried, so a bit wary of this first fill ex bourbon barrel.

I should not have been worried, seriously interesting with dark chocolate and that apricot jam, marzipan, royal icing combination from the top of a christmas cake, then the palate just explodes in your mouth with huge hits of fresh fruit and sugary sweetness and a maltiness that comes on the end of the palate towards the finish.

Seriously tasty stuff, maybe i need to look at this distillery more.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Really dark chocolate, like almost 100% cocoa solids, then a berry note that works well with the chocolate, a hint of marzipan, apricot jam and royal icing, like a good iced Christmas cake topping, waxy fresh Madagascan vanilla pods also

Palate

Ooft, where did that come from, seriously fruity, comes from nowhere, an explosion of tropical fruit jelly, so sweet like it's been dipped in sugar, vanilla then a maltiness, like Horlicks with a large spoonful of sugar

Finish

Huge fruity finish, with a massive malty kick
