The Macallan / Gordon & MacPhail

Macallan 2006 Speymalt (Gordon and MacPhail) Review

Macallan 2006 Speymalt (Gordon and MacPhail) Another from the Gordon and MacPhail Wood Makes the Whisky campaign this Macallan 2006 from the Speymalt series looks very interesting for what is effectively a 9 year old Macallan.

With age statements, and vintages, having gone from the distillery bottlings this dram could well be older than much of the new 1824 distillery collection, we will never know for sure.

The nose here blows away anything in the distilleries own 1824 range it's outstanding and very very enticing. The palate whilst very drinkable doesn't quite stand up as well as the nose but is still very pleasant drinker.

I'd happily have a bottle of only to nose regularly and sip on cooler Spring/autumn nights.

Available to buy right now from The Whisky Exchange

Thanks to Gordon and MacPhail for the official sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

The first sniff brings back toffee and a slightly nutty note, then as you get further it becomes caramel coated raisins and sultanas, molasses and dried banana, hints of tinned apricots in light syrup and freshly emulsioned walls, hints of spice play with my senses coming then disappearing as I look more for them, I really like the nose here.

Palate

Tangy and spicy much more alcohol nip than I was expecting from the nose and 43% ABV but it softens to tangy citrus fruits, caramel and hints f gentle rubber mix with Christmas cake fruits and mixed spice, tasty but unexpected.

Finish

Soft waxy fruits and spice mix and dance on the mouth for a while after sipping.
