Jeffersons Groth Reserve Cask Finish Review

Jefferson’s Groth Reserve Cask Finish Tasted as part of a Jeffersons Tweet Tasting hosted by Steve Rush (@thewhiskywire) from The Whisky Wire, this Jefferson’s Groth Reserve Cask Finish was really quite interesting.

Bourbon which has been finished, something which i believe then makes it an American Whiskey rather than a Bourbon, for 9 months in ex-Cabernet Sauvignon barrels from Napa Valley’s renowned Groth Vineyards.

For me this dram promised a lot on the nose but didnt deliver on the palate, with the nose giving heavy fruits, vanilla, almost clying sweetness and the palate a huge overload of spices and a dry tannic finish. The red wine casks have added those notes that make me dislike red wine to this, so this is most definitely not for me, but for a red wine drinker looking to move to whiskey (or Whisky) this is an interesting dram to try.

Nose

Quite heavy & cloying, vanilla essence, marzipan, definitely more cask char here, quite deep fruits there too

Palate

Spicy, cloves, all spice, star anise, the inside of my spice cupboard, tannic, drying
