Port Charlotte PC12 Review

Port Charlotte PC12I recently reviewed four fabulous Port Charlotte expressions from Bruichladdich and so it was fabulous to get the opportunity to try this Port Charlotte PC12 just as it launches.

Launching today and tomorrow on a Viking Line cruise while crossing the Baltic Sea this Travel Retail exclusive will be rolling out worldwide for approx £110 a bottle.

I was lucky enough to be given an advance sample from Bruichladdich and have included my notes below.

I think the extra years have mellowed out the smoke on the nose, certainly some of the younger and NAS variants have had mouch stronger more pungent smoke on the nose that this, but it allows the sweeter, fruitier more citrus underneath to come through.

This is a fabulous dram, the extra aging over previous expressions adding a much rounder character to this, it's not the kick to the face that others have been in the past, instead it's more a slap but it still has that smoke you expect on the palate and it still does it's intended job of being hugely powerful, and flavoursome.

This is a cracking dram, and the flavours work perfectly for me, and for me this is the best Port Charlotte so far, others will disagree and want the more pungent smoke from earlier batches, but for me this is what Port Charlotte was always aiming to be, and it works perfectly.

Joining the PC12 at Travel Retail is a new Octomore 7.2 keep an eye on the blog for some Octomore reviews coming soon.

Thanks to Bruichladdich for the advance sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Initial dusty dunnage warehouse notes then iodine and sweet honey roast root vegetables of carrots and parsnips, there's a mossy heathery peat smoke that's a lot tamer than I was expecting, lemongrass and floral gums, sweet golden raisins and dates and chalky Edinburgh rock

Palate

Wow this is powerful, the smoke is here and in spades, earthy smoke and village cottage chimneys as well, Edinburgh rock and masses of waxy orange peel and a hint of freshly crushed lemongrass

Finish

Waxy orange peel and chalky Edinburgh rock with that heathery earthy smoke still coming
