I've been a big fan of the first two 101 whiskies books (101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die and 101 World Whiskies to Try Before You Die) and they regularly come off the bookshelf for me to flick through or research idea from. When i heard that author Ian Buxton (@101whiskies) was releasing a Revised and Updated version of the 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die book i was really intrigued, my mind was already wondering as to what new whiskies would be in the book and whether I will have already tried them.
Ian's writing style is pleasant and easy to read with witty puns and ditties and with tasting notes that reflect true life and meaningful without being the verbose style of many other books. There's information about the distillery as well as the expression and all of the information is meaningful and interesting.
There's some nice new additions to the book including Texan newcomer Balcones (which i think Mrs Buxton has taken ownership of all of Ian's supplied of) and the fantastic The Tweeddale blend along with a fantastic array of reasonably priced (some not so but not rediculous) drams that Ian would happy take with him to a Desert Island.
Like all things there are some of Ian's choices that would not be mine and some I would like to see added, there's defintely not enough Jura in the book for my own personal liking, but if you manage to make your way through the majority, if not all, of the drams in this book then you will have had a great range of whiskies and whiskeys from all of the major regions.
Ian also produced the 101 World Whiskies to Try Before You Die and i'm already wondering what next on Ian's like of books, maybe the 101 Really Hard To Find Whiskies to Try Before You Die or even 101 Drinks that Arent Whiskies to Try Before You Die... whatever Ian does it will be written well and a pleasure to read, I really can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
