SMWS March 2014 Preview Tasting Review

. It's that time again and so for March's The Scotch Malt Whisky Society outturn preview evening i returned to my favourite haunt at Queen St for a 5 dram tasting overseen by SMWS Ambassador Ben (@BenKaylor).

A cracking set of five drams picked by Ben, you can see my notes below, and some great company. My only regret is that the SMWS 30.80 A wicker basket full of dark pleasures (no review i'm afraid but simple quick notes are desicated coconut, vanilla and super smooth sweetness) didn't make it onto the tasting, as i had a wee sip of this dram after in the bar and it blew away all five of the others. Next time go with your gut Ben :)

Once again a great night and one of the best reasons to be a member of the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society as the chat is as much part of it as the whisky.

I can't wait until the next one.

If you're a whisky fan then the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really is for you.

This distillery gets a bit of abuse from some but there's no denying they make some damn drinkable whiskies, and this is certainly one of them, figs featured prominintly and it was so lovely and great value for money that i bought a bottle.

If you're a whisky fan then the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really is for you.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

There's a fantastic nose on this dram with american cream soda coming through strongly followed by figs and lots and lots of them, with fresh figs and fig rolls, it's a real fig overload

Palate

Sweet fig rolls with a gentle spicy sweetness and edges of undercooked pastry.

Finish

lovely fig roll and undercooked pastry

SMWS 39.93 - Pork Chops in Red Wine Sauce Review

. The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyFrom March's The Scotch Malt Whisky Society outturn this is 39.93 - Pork Chops in Red Wine Sauce

I've tried a few from this distillery in the last few months but this one really just did not agree with me, although it was very drinkable, and very minty, it just didn't have that hook that brought me in and for the age it was more prickly than i would have expected. Still perfectly drinkable but not one i'd go personally out my way to have although there were a few others who loved it..

If you're a whisky fan then the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really is for you.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

wow i was not expecting that, it's minty, and menthol and eucalyptus oil with mint sauce and almost a freshness underneath, really unusual

Palate

mint sauce with hint of fruit hiding in the background, some beef jerky grows in the palate after the mint

Finish

beef jerky with light mint sauce and ground spices

SMWS 41.58 - Juicy, Juicy, tart and fruity Review

. The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyFrom March's The Scotch Malt Whisky Society outturn this is 41.58 - Juicy, Juicy, tart and fruity

A great way to start a whisky tasting there was a lot of fruit going on here and lots of discussion round the table. For me the fruity note at the end of the palate was star fruit but many thought it was a cross between strawberry and gooseberry with that sweet and sour mix, whichever it was it was a great easy drinker of a dram.

If you're a whisky fan then the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really is for you.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

the first note in here for me is chocolate limes, then a lemon & lime bitter fruitiness is joined with hints of caramel and demerara sugar then fruits come bouncing in like eating a whole packet of starburst in one go

Palate

Fruity and tangy with lots of chocolate lime and touches of star fruit

Finish

tangy and with a slight bitter note that goes a touch almondy

Always good to end the normal tasting with an Islay and what and Islay this is, really lemony and smoky with such a lovely easy drinking palate on this, lovely stuff.

If you're a whisky fan then the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really is for you.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

A lemon smoke note comes out strong it's like a good piece of fish smoking over gentle burning lemongrass with a chunk of pork meatiness and hints of dried fruits and vanilla

Palate

Super smooth sweetness and fruitiness with lemon strong in here along with antiseptic

Finish

It grows and grows to a strong lemon smoke finish

This often forgotten about campbelltown distillery really does seem to be producing the goods again anf this dram had some really lovely flavours in it, probably getting the second spot on tonights tasting from me, i really enjoyed this one.

If you're a whisky fan then the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really is for you.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Huge sherry influence hits the nose first then a chalky mineralness with a light freshness underneath, then there;s lots of tobacco leaves and the smell of an unlit cigar the raisin fruitiness takes over

Palate

tobacco leaves and rich fruitiness combine with a meatyness and chalky mineral with some leather bringing up the backnotes

Finish

chalky and fruity, like a meaty chalky edinburgh rock
