SMWS Ultimate 2014 Highlights Review

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyThe last year, 2014, was a great year for me with The Scotch Malt Whisky Society as i reviewed 100 of their drams and got to taste some exceptional whiskies.

2015 has started just as well with them having an Ultimate 2014 Highlights tasting at Queen Street last night. Of the 6 drams we tried I'd have 3 last year (and have included those notes below as well) and 3 that I had not.

The tasting was led by the awesome and charasmatic Ben Kaylor and he had picked some great drams, some discussion with him for next year has mentioned an idea of putting away at least a bottle a month to ensure a wider spread over the year as most of the drams in this tasting were from the last 1/4 of 2014, but thats not an issue with so many fabulous bottlings.

I dragged along 4 guys from work to this and they all throughly enjoyed themselves and loved the selection of whiskies. Even between all of us there was a mix of favourites alhough for me the 26.105 Bumblebees by the Sea was extra special and very much the dram of the evening.

Great food as always accompanied the drams, i was too busy enjoying it to take a picture of it, but here are some of the pics from last night.

SMWS 1.183 A Vibrant Enigma Review

View Standard Review Page

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyA very special The Scotch Malt Whisky Society dram is 1.183 A Vibrant Enigma as it's the oldest dram ever bottled by them, at an astonishing 48 years old. Tasted at the Ultimate 2014 highlights tasting.

I'm planning again to get to over 100 The Scotch Malt Whisky Society reviews again in 2015 and this is no6 of that.

This is meant to be an ex-bourbon cask but it's got the mahogany colour of ex sherry and a lot of the notes to go with it, but who knows what effect 48 years has had and this was distilled almost 20 years before the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society came into existence and i think we can all be honest and say there#s only so much history anyne can know about these.

Massive fruity notes, furniture polish and lots and lots of cherries in here, it's an astonishing dram, not my favourite of the night but certain one i'm very very happy to have tried.

There's just something completely more-ish about this dram, the beeswax and honey, the fudge and salted caramels are totally up my street, this is one of the best drams i've had from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society and for me stole the show at this tasting.

SMWS 91.20 The Rumbling Thunder of Contentment Review

View Standard Review Page

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyAlways great to taste some old whisky and this The Scotch Malt Whisky Society 91.20 The Rumbling Thunder of Contentment is only a couple of years younger than me. Tasted at the Ultimate 2014 highlights tasting.

I'm planning again to get to over 100 The Scotch Malt Whisky Society reviews again in 2015 and this is no5 of that.

Filled with that light menthol/mint note from older whiskies it comes through strong against the refill ex bourbon cask, theres some fruity, fig like notes that i would have expected more from ex sherry casks but the amount of time this has been in the cask has obviously helped with those notes and reduced much of the fresh vanilla from first fill ex bourbon. A cracking dram and a very popular one at the tasting.
