Tasting Notes / An SMWS Night With No Scotch

An SMWS Night With No Scotch Review

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society A wee invite from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society and both Neil (@neilmackinnon1) and I joined a select group for an intimate tasting of some of the Japanese drams from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society's December outturn.

Bookended by some Irish Whiskey and with some fabulous food and some interesting Bourbon in the middle there are some outstanding drams on offer for member this month.

The G12.1 and 119.14 (which is released on Monday - keep an eye out for that email folks) were my pick of the bunch and although i didnt get on brilliantly with the B3.1 I will certainly be giving it another attempt in the coming couple of weeks.

With great company and superb whiskies it's difficult not to love the surroundings of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society's Queen Street venue and thefood is just awesome too, if you're in just order a side of chips to see how good the food is. Although i'd always recommend the haggis.

It was really unusual to do a full tasting here without any Scotch Whisky but The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really do show off the best of what is available in the world and these drams are all worthy of a place in your whisky drinking collection.

Some fabulous food with sticky terriyaki chicken which was a fabulous choice for a short break in the whisky tasting.

Thanks again to The Scotch Malt Whisky Society for the invite to the tasting, please check out the notes on these whiskies and do some research, if you like your whisky then joining The Scotch Malt Whisky Society really is a no-brainer

SMWS 116.20 Fascinating complexity and finesse Review

View Standard Review Page

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietySome more Japanese drams with this The Scotch Malt Whisky Society 116.20 Fascinating complexity and finesse a fabulous peated Japanese dram.

Peaty and smoky but not the earthiness that you get with a lot of Scotch peated drams, lovely sweetness hiding here too but the real question is how on earth is this 26 years old and still over 61% ABV

If you are a whisky fan you really should consider joining The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

SMWS 118.3 Self-assured, buxom and rewarding Review

View Standard Review Page

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyAn Irish Dram from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society this 118.3 Self-assured, buxom and rewarding is a peaty Irish teaser.

Teasing with smoke and fruit, this is a soft and easy to drink dram that still offers lots of fruit and that warming winter peat, an oddball choice for a winter dram but one i'd happily have.

If you are a whisky fan you really should consider joining The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Sweet smoke with gentle fruits of melon and watermelon, light fresh citrus fruits and some digestive biscuits

Palate

SMWS 120.7 Sweet, fragrant and satisfying Review

View Standard Review Page

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietySome more Japanese drams with this The Scotch Malt Whisky Society 120.7 Sweet, fragrant and satisfying which was matured in a first fill Bota Corta cask.

Big sherry hits but theres none of that sulphuryness that comes with some of the sherry cask scotch, big discussion on Bota Corta casks and a lot of agreement that they are likely made from American oak rather than european oak. Interesting, unusual and very big.

If you are a whisky fan you really should consider joining The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

Prunes and sticky toffee pudding with wood spices and lots of nippiness n the nose, hints of chewing tobacco leaves and hints of green wood

sweet prunes and some sour sweets

SMWS B3.1 A little box of treasures Review

View Standard Review Page

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyYet another brand new The Scotch Malt Whisky Society distillery number this is B3.1 A little box of treasures which happens to be a Bourbon.

I found this a really difficult dram to get on with, and after a few discussions about the drams which had preceeded it i really do think it was affected negatively by what i had tasted already, I will be going back to try this one as there are some great notes coming out of this one.

If you are a whisky fan you really should consider joining The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

Tasting Notes & Details

Nose

light and foostie, with dusty and sour note like out of date tangtastics, blue cheese without the lactic cheesy notes becomes sweeter and lighter and more floral with crushed lavender

Palate

sweeter much lighter than the nose and more for me, parma violets with edges of sugar cane and vanilla

Finish

sweet and sugary
