#LastGreatMalts - Macduff Distillery Review

A few weeks ago I was invited to attend a Press Trip round the 5 John Dewar & Sons distilleries for their Last Great Malts tour, which i just could not refuse, and I was lucky enough to attend this trip last week.

There are 5 distilleries to go through so i'm going to do them as individual posts to be a bit more informative and as there would be a huge amount of tasting notes to accompany them.

First on the list, after arriving in Aberdeen, was Macduff distillery, which is commonly bottled under the name Glen Deveron (this is changing to The Deveron shortly) and the name is not Macduff due to one or two other claims on the name.

MacDuff Distillery

First up was a little get to know you session with some chat and a tasting of the Work in progress 12 year old, followed by a tour then a taste of the 18 year old work in progress (notes for both, below).

My experience of this distillery previously has been that they nose fantastically well but that there isnt much to the palate, and although i still think the palate on this 12 is a bit watery, the 18 is quite a lovely dram and has a lovely edge of spice.

A wee random fact about Macduff distillery is that the condensers on the wash stills are horizontal (see below) yet the ones on the spirit stills are vertical (as per the norm), thought to produce a lighter spirit.

Overall i love the nose on The Deveron's light, toffee'd and sweet with hints of fruit but the palate needs to have a bit more throughout the range, maybe at cask strength, or nearer, it would be more to my palate, but they are cracking drams and worth trying for those looking for something lighter and less hard work.

Next up in this series will be Aultmore distillery, later in the week

The Deveron 12 Year Old (work in progress) Review

The Deveron A work in progress 12 year old dram from Macduff distillery, this dram is not scheduled for release and may never see the light of day, but it's a pretty decent drinker in my opinion.

Tasted during a tour of the distillery and tasting.

Always been a bit of hassle for them to use the macduff name so have previously been bottled as Glen Deveron and will in the future be bottled as The Deveron.
