The Glasgow Distillery Company launched Makar Glasgow Gin, Glasgow’s first home-produced gin,
Makar Glasgow Gin is a premium handcrafted traditional gin distilled seven times in a state-of-the- art copper still named Annie and then left to rest for a minimum of two weeks to let the botanicals complete the process started in the still.
The first Glasgow-produced gin, Makar prides itself on its enlivening and aromatic recipe, which uses the finest juniper berries complemented by seven harmonising botanicals. Bright, vibrant and well- balanced Makar Glasgow Gin is perfect for gin-led cocktails, invigorating with tonic and worthy of its Makar name – the Scots word for poet.
The botanicals are celebrated in the packaging: the luxurious heptagonal-shaped bespoke bottle represents the seven botanicals (angelica root, liquorice, coriander seeds, lemon peel, cassia bark, black peppercorns & rosemary ) as the pillars supporting the heart of the recipe: the juniper.
Liam Hughes, CEO at The Glasgow Distillery Company, comments: “We spent a long time developing the recipe to ensure that the quality of our gin would meet our consumers’ expectations and our initial tastings seem to prove we have achieved that”.
The highly versatile gin also works very well in signature cocktails as well as with traditional tonic water and even on the rocks.
With the first bottling complete, Makar Glasgow Gin is being shipped to retailers all over Scotland and it is also available to consumers through the company’s online shop. “Our initial focus will be Glasgow first and foremost and, of course, the rest of Scotland”, states Mr Hughes, “and we have already confirmed a number of listings with key Glasgow and Scottish bars, restaurants and specialist retailers, including Bar Brel, Bon Accord, The Stirling Whisky Shop, The Good Spirits Company and Fortnum & Mason”.
Originally founded in 1770, The Glasgow Distillery was re-born in 2014 and by the end of the year, the company will start whisky distillation, which will result in the first single malt brand from Glasgow in over 100 years.
“It has been a really exciting time and we are delighted to get Glasgow’s first gin into the marketplace. Our Brand Ambassador, David Thomson has just started with us and he will be working closely with our partners to introduce Makar to bars in Glasgow”, comments Mr Hughes.
Makar Glasgow Gin will retail around £29 for a 70cl bottle at 43% ABV.
