Tomatin 15 Year Old Moscatel Wine Cask Finish
I’ve always had a bit of a thing for Tomatin, it’s a distillery that I really enjoy, it tends to sit on the lighter side with lots of fruits and vanilla, so a Moscatel wine cask finish sounds really interesting.
This limited edition of 6000 bottles is well priced for a limited edition 15 Year Old so I’m hoping this really works well.
The wine hasn’t added the sweetness I was expecting from Moscatel and instead brings in more of those red liquorice laces that works along with some red chilli spices. I think they balance well together and it has enough interest to make me really want a bottle.
You can pick this up from specialists like The Whisky Exchange.
Thanks to Tomatin for the official sample.
The nose on this is really quite interesting, there’s a minty, menthol note that comes first which I really didn’t expect, then liquorice comes in, more those red liquorice laces than hard black liquorice, there’s a soft fruity sweetness in the background that reminds me eating chewits as a kid.
That red liquorice is back again, along with a whack of red chilli spice in there also, the sweetness is there too but it’s more soft haribos, the white bit of the strawberry ones and the fried eggs without the yolk, it’s tasty and spicy, there’s also a tangy there of orange pith.
