Benriach 1990 Celebration of the Cask (Carn Mor)
I’m a big fan of the Carn Mor Celebration of the Cask series, lots of great casks packed full of flavour and bottled at the right time.
Benriach is a distillery I’m also keen on, even if they can’t seem to decide on a standard profile, it seems a bit like they want to keep experimenting which is a good and bad thing and its not a consistent flavour profile.
This dram however would be how I would love Benriach to go forward, good quality ex bourbon casks showing that fruityness against that light smoke, from their coke kiln, adding a smoky oily ness to it.
This is a damn good dram, which there are still a couple of bottles about of, such as at Master of Malt
Little hints of puff candy and gentle smoke, almost engine oil, mechanics garage like, initially before a gentle sweetness takes over, orange zest and vanilla pod infused white sugar, light tangerine jelly notes also that tickle the nostrils with a touch of bitterness along with some tinned mandarins in juice.
At first this comes across quite light and fresh with ozone and light watery fruit notes that combine with a hint of coal/coke smokiness and a dirty mechanics rag type oily ness, then there’s an underlying fruit note that’s all dried apricots and dried banana and hints of papaya.
Fruity, juicy and hints of oily smoke, this is a definite sunny autumnal day dram, filled with amazing flavours,
