Highland Park 12yr Cask 1140 (World Duty Free Gatwick Exclusive)
I have a love hate relationship with Highland Park with some being ones i love and others i don't so when i was invited to join a twitter tasting to sample the new 12 year old single cask which will be exclusive to London Gatwick airport i jumped at the chance.
When the sample arrived the first thing that drew my attention was the ABV, it's a HUGE 66.4% and as it turns out Highland park is generally put into cask at around the 69.5% ABV mark, which is really interesting to see something that high.
The HUGE ABV doesn't kill the dram though and i think it actually works well for it giving it a huge dose of punch that isnt there on the standard distillery bottlings.
If you're lucky enough to be flying through Gatwick North from 26th October, when this launches, then snap up a bottle of this.
Thanks to World Duty Free and Highland Park for the sample and including me on this tasting.
Ooooft that’s huge, crumbled cinder toffee and puff candy, heather honey & toffee sweetness & a huge dose of acetone, Edinburgh rock sweet fruity chalkiness. Treacle toffee and peanut brittle, tarte nectarines. Settles down in the glass to sweet heather honey and a puff of smoked cream.
the abv hides itself pretty well behind a smoked cream and heather honey arrival that goes on to add in some buttery popcorn & overcooked treacle scones, a buttered toasted crumpet note in there too, lovely stuff
huge smoky heather honey, getting sweeter and sweeter, like driving through burning heather licking a honey lollipop
