Tomatin 1997 Connoisseurs Choice (Gordon and MacPhail)
More from the Gordon and MacPhail Wood Makes the Whisky campaign this time a 1997 Tomatin from the Connoisseurs Choice range this is one I was really looking forward to trying.
I'm a big fan on Tomatin so trying this dram has me quite excited, I'm also really keen on the Gordon and MacPhail ranges which really do seen to be well selected.
Fabulous stuff, there's aniseed, a flavour I hate, but it's light enough and surrounded by fruit and spice to make it tasty, the spices on the palate caught me a bit by surprise, but this is seriously juicy there too, so it moves your head all over the place. Very drinkable and an interesting dram that I now want to spend much more time with.
Thanks to Gordon and MacPhail for the official sample.
This is really light to begin with and needs some time in the glass to open up a little and air, then more light oak, almost oak leaf sauce, comes through then a hint of very light aniseed, it grows punchier and more cured meats with fennel slices and fresh vanilla seeds then honeydew melon, interesting nose indeed
Sweet and juicy melon with a cinnamon and nutmeg crumb, the oak notes are back and there's still some aniseed hiding in the background, this is juicy and yummy.
Spicy, cinnamon and aniseed long lasting too.
