Yula 20 Years Old (Douglas Laing)
Inspired by the Norse goddess Yula is a recently released blended malt which will form part of a trilogy from the awesome Douglas Laing.
This 20 year old blended malt features island malts with a some highly sought after Peated malts included.
I'm really excited to try this, island malts (Jura, Highland Park and Talisker) are some of my favourite distilleries and obviously Islay so I'm hoping for a large swath of sweet peaty whisky here.
Oh this is fabulous, the nose doesn't give it away for the palate, the nose being fruity and toffee'd the palate more smoky and salty with the fruit taking a back seat.
I love the nose and the palate works great as a contrast to the nose, the finish leaves you wanting more, one to definitely add to you collection and I can't wait to see what the rest of this trilogy holds.
Thanks to Douglas Laing for the official sample
From the description I was expecting quite a highly peated nose but I didn't get that, there's a hint of smoke but it comes quite deep,in the dram, at first there's sweet fresh fruit salad, light syrup and a hint of toffee pennies, some dried cranberries and apricots and a handful,of chocolate covered raisins.
There's a hint of chalky smoke in here with sweet juicy melon and fresh fruit salad, with grapes and bitter grapefruit, ready salted handmade crisps and digestive biscuits with dried fruits coming through
Sweet and salty, melon and salty crisps
