Kilchoman Club Release - Third Edition
I was really quite excited about the possibility of this Kilchoman Club Release Third Edition after hearing about it's Maderia cask maturation as the Port cask dram was superb.
Barry (@thewhiskyphiles) from the Whisky Philes Blog was kind enough to organise a share of a bottle amongst a group of us and that is where I sampled this one, having not been quick enough to catch a bottle for myself.
The combination of sweet wine and earthy peat works fabulously in this 4 and half year old (11/02/2010-24/11/2014) dram which has been matured the entire time in an ex madeira wine cask.
This dram is both seriously sweet and seriously smoky in almost equal measures, and counts as one of my favourite Kilchoman drams, although I think the port one just pips it.
A mix of serious sweetness and earthy smoke with burnt toast and coffee grounds, the sweetness comes from caramel covered sweet apples, cigarette ash, some bitter citrus fruits and lots of waxy oily engine oil
Cigar ash, burnt toast and coffee grounds, very leathery and engine oily, quite dirty but in a good way, sweet toffee apples. Waxy mouthfeel.
Waxy dirty, and cigar ash, with coffee
