A Triple Whammy of Glenfiddich
Time for another set of interesting drams from the Speyside distillery Glenfiddich.
With Snow Phoenix from my good friend Adrian (@mynameisgone) from Whisky Chronice and the 15 Year Old Distillery Edition from my another great whisky friend Jon (@dvdbloke) from Scotch and Sci Fi along with my bottle of Rich Oak this is a wondeful set of drams.
All very different yet all very similar with lots of fresh fruit being a constant reminder of ust how good Glenfiddich is and just how lovely it tastes.
There are still a number of Glenfiddich drams that I have had small amounts of and not quite got round to reviewing that I need to do soon, not least the Age of Discovery series which I spend a lot of time with it in front of me at work.
If you have yet to try any of the wonderful drams from Glenfiddich then you really need to sort that out sharpish.
Glenfiddich 14 Year Old Rich Oak
Another very interesting dram, this time the Glenfiddich 14 Year Old Rich Oak.
A recent release edition from Glenfiddich, this was aged for 14 years before a finish in new American and Spanish oak casks. They say the American oak adds spice, vanilla and fruit, and the Spanish oak brings elegant fruit, spice and complexity.
Why not pop over to The Green Welly and pick up a bottle for yourself.
Masses of oak in here, it's sweet underlying almost like an oak leaf sauce, under that is a mass of sweet syrup covered tinned fruit salad with soft pears and grape coming through strongest along with the slightest hint of grated nutmeg.
spicy and tangy with grated nutmeg and haribo tangtastic sweets, that tinned fruit in syrup sweetness comes through strong on the end and leaves an oily mouthfeel.
tinned fruit salad in syrup and haribo tangtastics.
Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Distillery Edition
Another very interesting dram, this time the Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Distillery Edition.
A special edition Glenfiddich. This 15 year old is non chill filtered and has been bottled at higher strength. This is classic Glenfiddich, but with added complexity and character..
Many thanks to Jon (@dvdbloke) from Scotch and Sci Fi for the very kind sample. Occasionally available to pick up at great prices in your local supermarket or from specialists like like Master of Malt.
There's a really treacley fruitiness in here with raisins and sultanas and a really lovely dark malty edge, after a while in the glass it goes more floral with lavendar and carnations and cheery blossoms, touches of fresh vanille pod burst through also. hints of fresh honeydew melon jump out at the end also yum.
creamy and oily with more floral notes, lots of raisins and sultanas with hints of ground black pepper creeping their way in alongside some plum and nectarine.
plum juice and nectarine, lovely and too drinkable
Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix
Some whiskies have a really interesting back story and this Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix is definitely one of them.
A Limited Edition release after a lot of drama at the distillery in the winter of 2010 as the snow which covered most of the UK caused major problems at the distillery with the collapse of a warehouse roof. The casks included bourbon and Oloroso and they range from 13 and 30 years of age.
Many thanks to Adrian (@mynameisgone) from Whisky Chronice for the very kind sample of this limited dram, still available from places like Master of Malt or from auction, but now at premium prices.
This is an interesting nose, there's the lovely fruitiness i would expect from a Glenfiddich, with fresh honeydew melon, some malty and oak notes come in here and theres a cigarette ash smoky note hiding in the background
a huge hit of malt loaf and oak up front with sherry soaked fruit and nut cake hiding in the middle and some gentle smoke in the background, yummy
gentle smoke and sherry soaked fruit.
