A Celebration of Carn Mor Whiskies

TestRiverflow (Morrison & Mackay)i've had a few drams from Independent Bottle Morrison & Mackay in the past, many of which I haven't reviewed as they were sampled at festivals and events, so it's about time i spent more time drinking and reviewing them.

This selection of drams from Morrison & Mackay includes some unnamed distillery NAS bottlings, the Strictly Limited series which are 46% and generally one or two casks but usually fairly young, generally under 10/11 years of age, and priced as serious session whiskies. Then there's the Celebration of the Cask range which are all single cask at original cask strength and presented in gorgeous wooden crate style boxes.

This set of reviews concentrates mainly on the Celebration of the Cask range but touches on all three.

Morrison and Mackay drams are available to buy from Specialists like Master of Malt and Robert Graham

Glenlossie 1997 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay)

Glenlossie 1997 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay) From the Morrison & Mackays Celebration of the Cask range this Glenlossie 1997, from cask number 6749) is a tasty example from this distillery that i've only ever had before as an SMWS dram.

Filled with notes of spicy cinnamon cola, then orange and fruits, it's a really tasty dram that works really well at this ABV.

if you like the idea of lovely sweet citrus fruits and spicy cola notes then this is definitely for you.

Still available at Master of Malt and a damn good dram too.

Cinnamon cola, rum infused tobacco, fresh waxy vanilla and smouldering orange oil, aromatic leafs, tropical fruit bitters.

Eucalyptus and vanilla, waxy preserved lemons and more of that cinnamon cola and aromatic leaf, tangerine skin.

Cinnamon cola

Glenrothes 2006 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay)

Glenrothes 2006 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay) From the Morrison & Mackays Celebration of the Cask range this Glenrothes 2006 is a young 11 years old, quite unusual for the Celebration of the Cask range, but is full of flavour.

Matured in an ex-sherry butt, this produced 610 bottles at a whopping 65.5% ABV which sounds way more than anyone would want to drink but it's actually really tasty, this really is just like single cask mars bar with toffee caramel and chocolate, then underlying savoury notes.

One of the nicest sherry cask whiskies i've had in a long time, brilliant stuff and a real contender for one of the slots in the top 5 whiskies of 2017 for me.

Sold out at Master of Malt but if you find one anywhere snap it up.

Chocolate and toffee with lashings of treacle, spices and fruit cake mix, this is really enticing, I want to spend all day nosing this dram, it’s huge ABV doesn’t come across as spirity, elements of cream crackers and rich tea biscuits.

Huge fruit cake spices, wood oak, creamy and then lashings of melted caramel and mixed milk chocolate, a hint of praline and those cream crackers again.

Huge, lasting, yum

Mortlach 1995 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay)

Mortlach 1995 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay) From the Morrison & Mackays Celebration of the Cask range this Mortlach 1995 is one from the range that really had me excited.

Mortlach is one of those distilleries that tends to produce consistently great whisky and the reputation Mortlach has as "the Beast of Dufftown" comes out a little in this one with huge savoury notes mixing with juicy fruits and a fizzy, bitter, tarte note.

this is complex, tasty, moreish and one you will want to hunt out and drink again and again.

Sold out at Master of Malt but if you find one anywhere snap it up.

Instantly fills the nostrils with a waxy savoury note, almost waxed crackers, touches of cured meats prosciutto, dusty warehouses, talcum powder, sour fruits, starfruit dragon fruit and bitter tropical fruits.

tangy tropical fruits and a lot of them, fizzy tangtastics, cured meats, waxy lemon peel and preserved lemons, sherbet dib dabs and oak wood spices

long lasting fruitiness that wraps with wax and meaty notes and a touch of spice.

Riverflow (Morrison & Mackay)

Riverflow (Morrison & Mackay)i've had a few drams from Independent Bottle Morrison & Mackay in the past, many of which I haven't reviewed as they were sampled at festivals and events, so it's about time i spent more time drinking and reviewing them.

This is Riverflow, a sister product to The Big Strand, and is a single malt from the Speyside region, I've certainly heard some rumours at to exactly which distillery this is but I won't say what they are.

It is however a combination of first fill and refill ex-bourbon barrels giving this a really tasty profile filled with soft vanilla, light galaxy chocolate, tangy orange peel and almond notes, and chocolate sprinkles.

This is seriously good dram, and one I would highly recommend you seek out and try.

Available to buy from Specialists like Master of Malt.

Soft gentle vanilla essence, light galaxy chocolate notes, tangy orange peel and notes of orange pith, quite a lot of almond paste, cherry bakewells and chocolate sprinkles.

Vanilla and creme brûlée, chocolate sprinkles, vermicelli, almond paste, tangy orange peel and hints of wood spice.

Tang of wood spice, vanilla, creme brûlée

Westport 1995 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay)

Westport 1995 Celebration of the Cask (Morrison & Mackay) From the Morrison & Mackays Celebration of the Cask range this single cask blended malt Westport from 1995 is typical of the distillery making up most of this.

Again a teaspooned dram, Westport is widely known as Glenmorangie (generally teaspooned with Glen Moray), and for a 20 odd year old single cask Glenmorangie the pricing on this is brilliant value for money.

filled with vanilla, citrus and riverbank grassy notes this is a delicous dram that adds in some juicy wine poached pears and spice to the palate, this is a beauty of a dram.

Available at Master of Malt this is seriously well priced and dangerously drinkable.

Vanilla cream, grated citrus peel & cinnamon infused sugar, grassy riverbanks and dry hay bales, a bubbly coke and ice cream float, butterscotch angel delight too.

Sweet and sour pork, vanilla & cinnamon infused sugar, grassy riverbanks, more angel delight and a hint of spiced pears in red wine.

Spicy, vanilla, sugar

Williamson 2010 Strictly Limited (Morrison & Mackay)

Williamson 2010 Strictly Limited (Morrison & Mackay) From the Morrison & Mackay Strictly Limited range this is a 6 year old from a single sherry butt, but thats where it gets complicated as this is actually a blended malt!

It's something that happens a lot where distillers don't want their casks landing in the hands of independent bottlers and riding on the coat tails of their brand name so they "teaspoon" the casks they are swapping with whisky from another distillery effectively making them Blended malts.

This is Williamson, widely recognised as being teaspooned Laphroaig, and matured in a (probably refill) sherry butt, this is a damn good dram, filled with that sweet soft creamy smoke that Laphroaig brings at a young age along with salty seafood and hints of antiseptic.

This is a brilliant whisky, and one that if you like a bit of smoke you will absolutely love.

available at Master of Malt but be quick as this wont hang around for long.

oh yum, sweet creamy smoky dark treacle toffees, earthy smoked shellfish, a slightly tarte plum, preserved lemons, salty seafood, coal tar soap and a light hint of antiseptic ointment.

creamy treacle toffees, smoked shellfish, wood spices, cottage chimney smoke, coal tar soap, those tangy preserved lemons again, softer than expected

soft creamy, smoky, coal tar, gentle and tangy

Bottle Name: Williamson 2010 Strictly Limited (Morrison & Mackay)
Age: 6
ABV: 46.00
Distiller: Morrison and Mackay
Bottler: Morrison & Mackay
Type: Blended Malt
From: Scotland, Islay
