The Big Boutique-y Birthday Bash

Speyburn 7yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)Five years ago That Boutique-y Whisky Company started to produce some small batch drams and i've reviewed a number of them over the years, and tried a few more also.

To give full disclosure I've actually helped out TBWC a couple of times at events so have put a bit of a self imposed moritorium on their whiskies for reviewing on this site to ensure i'm not being accused of anything untoward.

This opportunity arose to participate in the Tweet Tasting celebrating the 5th birthday and i applied and was selected so have decided to post the reviews on site for all to see and read.

Enjoy the notes and please remember to check out lots of other blogs for their views also to show that i can actually be impartial.

Check retailers like Master of Malt for the whole range of TBWC drams.

Thanks to That Boutique-y Whisky Company for including me on this Birthday Tweet Tasting.

Blended Whisky #3 23yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)

Blended Whisky #3 23yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)I've had a good sniff at this dram a good number of times whilst at the other side of the table at events with Dave, but i've not had a sample of it until today.

I know this has won numerous awards and you really can't go wrong with a 23 year old blended whisky, it really shows most of the malt snobs why they should wake up and sniff the whisky.

This does have a lot going on, mainly on the palate as the nose is light and held up high by the grain underneath, light, tangy, fruity, spicy, complex, yum.

Available to buy from Master of Malt.

light and tangy, a definite influence of sweetness from grain whisky, fresh & biscuity, a hint of something smoky lurking, a splash of lemon toffees

soft sweet and gentle, fizzy fruit juice (tizer maybe), a little spiced toffee apple, slightly drying

a bit more drying that i expected, but fruity too

Invergordon 43yr Batch 11 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)

Invergordon 43yr Batch 11 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)I've had the pleasure of a number of drams of invergordon from That Boutique-y Whisky Company and they have always been good, old grain generally is, and i'm really looking forward to sipping on this one.

Invergordon was always wheat based, until around 2011, unlike some of the others who chopped and changed to whichever grain was the cheapest.

Rather tasty this one, lots of lovely doughy scones and toffee notes, this is definitely a tasty fruiy, interesting one.

Sold out at Master of Malt but keep an eye on the site for more new releases coming soon.

Doughy cherry scones, pva glue, light weetabix, treacle toffees hiding in the background

Irish Single Malt #2 14yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)

Irish Single Malt #2 14yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)So this is a dram that intrigues me as an Irish Single Malt Whiskey is not something i have had a great deal of, as much of what is produced there is single pot still not single malt.

I'm really fascinated by this dram, and was really excited about it before i opened the sample.

hmmmm i need to say i'm not sure about this, a lot of prickly of dry spice on the tongue, but the nose is exceptional, only wish the palate matched the nose.

Sold out now, but keep an eye on Master of Malt for some new releases coming soon.

freshly baked apple pie, with that caramelised demerera sugar as a topping, with a splash of butterscotch angel delight, a touch of airfix glue and nutmeg & orange oil

quite a lot dryer and more 'stale' than i expected from the nose, cardboard, those malty sweets that look like a band that i can never remember the name of, dunnage warehouses

shorter and dryer than i wanted.

Macallan 29yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)

Macallan 29yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)I know a lot of people who would be jumping over obstacles for a chance to try this but for me Macallan has never really been one of those distilleries i've got on with very well at all so this is one i'm not as looking forward to as the others.

I think it's the sherry element, i wouldn't say sulphur like others, but definitely a rubbery note that normally comes in Macallan that i just don't get on with, but lets see how this is and whether i can get on with it.

I'm still really unsure of Macallan despite this being very drinkable, i just think it's not to my palate, with a bit of leather and fruit it's definitely tasty though.

Sold out at Master of Malt but keep an eye on the site for more new releases coming soon.

dusty rooms, old well worn but looked after leather, plum sauce, tomato plant, a little soft nectarine too

tangy orange peel and pith, soor plooms, a hint of new leather, spiced pomegranate seeds

spiced plums, a touch sour and spices coming in

Speyburn 7yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)

Speyburn 7yr (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)This is a really nice way to begin the tasting celebrating the 5th Birthday of That Boutique-y Whisky Company, with the 100th label design and this Speyburn 7 year old.

Speyburn is a distillery i haven't had a huge amount of so this is one i was really interesting in trying.

A really interesting dram that starts off on the nose, for me, with lashings of soft toffee and a huge dose of juicy mandarins, youthful, spritely, full on and damn tasty.

Sold out now, but keep an eye on Master of Malt for some new releases coming soon.

MacGowans Highland Toffee, wrapped around preserved lemons and a waxy juiciness, along with a hint of tinned mandarins (in juice) , going a little treacle scone like

Quite strong on the palate, hints of wood spice, vanilla cream, toffee sauce, tangy citrus peel strips rolled in cinnamon

spicy, pretty full on, tasty as hell though
