Mezan Rum Tweet Tasting

Mezan Jamaica XO RumI really do like a rum, and have taken to drinking a lot more Dark and Stormy's recently so when the opportunity arose to join in with a Mezan Rum, who i'd heard great things about from colleagues, tasting with The Whisky Wire i jumped at the chance.

4 different caribbean rums to sip and sample and all very tasty, my notes are shown below for each of the rums.

This has definitely renewed my wish to sample and review more rums for the blog, so time to hunt out some more, and please remember and let me know if you know of any i really shouldn't miss.

All of the rums tasted are vailable to purchase from Master of Malt.

Mezan Jamaica Worthy Park 2005 Rum

Mezan Jamaica Worthy Park 2005 RumJamaican rum from the Worthy park distillery distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2017, now that sounds like a treat to me.

Worthy Park produces a number of products but are very much at the forefront of producing rum in the classic Jamaican style, this is the one from this set that really had me excited.

I thought this rum was the pick of the bunch, orange and chocolate notes, hints of acetone and glue but their well matched by the chocolate orange and bitter cocoa notes, this is a definite sipper of a rum, and one i need a bottle of in my cupboard.

Available to purchase from Master of Malt.

Orange peel and pith, orange oil, terrys chocolate orange, furniture polish, acetone and PVA glue, beeswax polished mahogany furniture, cocoa powder, dusty rooms.

Mezan Jamaica XO Rum

Mezan Jamaica XO RumThis Jamaican rum from Mezan is is a blend of casks from two distilleries, Monymusk and Hampden and is XO, which i still can't work out what that means in terms of rum age.

This is interesting though the Hampden distillery having Scottish roots (yes that is also the name of our National Football Stadium).

I thought this rum was very light, with gentle fruity notes, it reminded me a lot of some of the gentler whiskies out there as it really needs you to work hard at it, but is rewarding when you do. Really reasonably priced, this would be a nice rum to sip or in things like a Cuba Libre.

Available to purchase from Master of Malt.

Light baked goods, blind baked apple tart cases, light glue notes, light stewed Bramley apples, caster sugar, hints of milk chocolate, some plantain / underripe banana notes also.

Mezan Panama 2004 Rum

Mezan Panama 2004 RumOne or two of my Day Job colleagues were talking about Mezan rum and utterly raving about the Panamanian rum they had from Mezan, which although not this one, had me really excited.

Distilled in Panama in 2004 and bottled in 2017 this rum from an undisclosed distillery really has got my mouth watering before i've even cracked open the sample.

I thought this rum might have just about pipped the Jamaican 2005 rum to the best of the bunch, but it's just edged out by ABV making it not as thick and viscous on the palate. Lots of complexity in this rum with sweet fruits and bitter coca mixing with oakiness and spices, this is a sipping rum, and a damn good one at that.

Available to purchase from Master of Malt.

Oakiness, bitter cocoa, dark chocolate shavings, vermicelli, buttered overcooked toasted white bread, orange peel and oil, bitter apple peel,

Sweet juicy fruits, sugar infused grapefruit, vermicelli, buttered undercooked toast, toffee apples, caramel sauce, vanilla sugar and a hint of cinnamon dust

Goes more cinnamon spicy but sweet, cinnamon sugar maybe

Mezan Trinidad 2007 Rum

Mezan Trinidad 2007 RumRums are produced in many places around the world, including Scotland now, and Trinidian rum has a great reputation for being on the very tasty side so I was really looking forward to this one.

Distilled in 2007 and bottles in 2017, so does that make it 10, as part of Mezans collection of rums from around the world.

I thought this rum was a really quite tasty sipping rum, lots of aromatic leaf and victoria sponge cake notes in here which are right up my street.

Available to purchase from Master of Malt.
