A Decad of Octomore Reviews

Stella Cidre Raspberry I have to be honest here and admit that at first i was quite afraid of Bruichladdich's Octomore range, i was worried that they would be far too smoky for me, too much peat influence that i would hate them.

Don't get me wrong i love Peated whiskies, but I'm also the kind of person who if pushed would say my personal preference is for light and fruity drams that really challenge you, that make you work hard to get flavours from.

Thats why it's taken me so long to get through any Octomore drams and to find the time to work through them.

Octomore, named after the James Browns farm above Port Charlotte, was originally a late night 'what if' that has turned into a worldwide hit with a cult following, and after tasting this lot, deservedly so.

Thank you to Bruichladdich themselves and also to a group of my very good friends for these samples without whom i wouldn't have picked up the courage to try these super heavily peated drams.

My personal favourite has been the 6.2 Travel Retail exclusive, but they are all fabulous and worth seeking out.

Octomore 1695 Discovery - Feis Ile 2014

Octomore Discovery This Octomore 1695 Discovery is a 7 year old Octomore bottled (well only 1695 bottles) for Feis Ile in 2014 at a whopping 69.5%

This Octomore was distilled four times making it part of the X4 series and matured in Oloroso sherry casks.

This is delicious, the nose is utterly outstanding and you can't help, but continue to over and over again smell this dram.

Massively privileged to,have have tried this thanks to Ansgar Speller (@ansgarspeller) and Thomas Speller (@thomas_speller) from the Whisky Speller blog

I spent 5 minutes sticking my nose in and out of the glass saying wow, the nose is creamy and sweet, smoky and gentle, there's, understandably, a spike of alcohol, citrus fruit peel and some crushed cornflakes and a hint of cold porridge

Creamy and sweet, fresh juicy sweet pears and a hint of pear drops, earthy smoke that pops in and out playing hide and seek, light and gentle considering the abv

Long lasting best smooth and sweet.

Octomore 2.2 Orpheus

Octomore 2.2 Orpheus I’ve had this sample, from Jon (@dvdbloke) from the Scotch and Sci-Fi blog for a while and kept putting it off, then a while back i decided to blog all the Octomore samples I had in one go, and then got more, thus todays mass upload.

This surprised me as i really was expecting a much bigger smoky, earthy, vegetal hit from this but it’s sweet, cherry smoke (like pipe smoke) and very very drinkable.

The finish is huge and goes on forever so this definitely isn’t the dram you have first in a tasting but it’s certainly a damn good dram.

Thanks again to Jon (@dvdbloke) for the sample.

Initially hints of gentle sweet smoke almost cherry pipe smoke with coal tar soap with prickly notes that go more tannic and wood spices, as it sits in the glass more earthy heather smoke

Coal tar soap and a huge earthy smoke note there's hints of cherry pipe smoke and tobacco again and cherry lips with charcoal

Charcoal and cherry drops

Octomore 4.1

Octomore 4.1 Thanks again to Jon (@dvdbloke) from the Scotch and Sci-Fi blog for this sample also, another Huge hitting dram.

Again the smoke is not as huge as you would expect, it’s softened by some fabulous spicy, oaky, bbq notes that give off a chalkiness in the peat.

There’s something almost Edinburgh rock like in this and i like it, a lot.

Thanks again to Jon (@dvdbloke) for the sample.

Heathery mossy peat smoke with hints of spice, then lots of fruity syrupy notes, bbq charcoal and overlooked buttered toast with wood spices, creamy vanilla and wood sap

Sweet sticky bbq ribs and chalky heathery smoke with lots of fresh fruit and lots of intricate wood spices cinnamon, nutmeg and wood spices

Octomore 4.2 Comus

Octomore 4.2 Comus Thanks again to Jon (@dvdbloke) from the Scotch and Sci-Fi blog for this sample also, can you tell he likes his Octomore?

Again this is so different to the others, mint and menthol notes mix with vegetation, sweet toffee and powdery, chalky smoke, i really can’t say which one i prefer.

Thanks again to Jon (@dvdbloke) for the sample.

Mint and menthol with sweet heathery mossy smoke with a hint of damson jam, leather and talcum powder, toffee, caramel pennies and fruity Edinburgh rock and hints of fresh herbs

Sweet and chalky, then bigger and spicier on the tongue, leather furniture and gal old powder, chalk and caramel hints of jam

Octomore 5.1

Octomore 5.1 Many thanks to my whisky brother Steve Prentice (@steveprentice) from the Somerset Whisky Blog for the sample of this dram a while back which I only recently got around to.

Peated to 169PPM this seriously Peated dram is the ultimate in demonstrating how power and subtlety can be balanced.

Salt and lots of it, coastal, salty, salty seaweed and salty chips, but with sweet mouthwatering vegetables and vanilla. This is seriously drinkable and not what you would expect from 169PPM but it's certainly delicious and drinkable.

Thanks for the sample again Steve (@steveprentice)

The peat here is never as smoky as you would expect, but comes across much more earthy salty vegetation, coastal notes of salty seaweed and salty chip, shop chips, creamy vanilla and hints of oak char and almost a smoked Bavarian cheese note hiding in the background.

Salty, coastal smoke, roast earthy vegetables, fresh vanilla pods, oak spices and gentle ground white pepper, sweet and salty, like mixed popcorn but without the cardboard note.

Sweet and salty, mouthwatering

ABV: 59.50

Octomore 6.1

Octomore 6.1 Thanks to Yoav (@yoavgel) from Whisky Gospel for this sample of Octomore 6.1.

More of that vegetal, honey roast vegetables and moss, lots of chalky smoke, and then the curve ball of fruity notes including lychee on the palate.

This is sweet and to my taste, i might have found a preference.

Thanks again to Yoav (@yoavgel) for the sample.

Huge sweet heather smoke, reminds me a little of the smell of burning heather but with honey roast vegetables added too, light fresh fruity notes of melon and lychee and chalky Edinburgh rock in here too

Sweet and smoky, overlooked buttery toast and spicy onion chutney with sweet melon and lychee sauce and crushed Edinburgh rock

Sweet, spicy, smoky, chalky

Octomore 6.2

Octomore 6.2 Another Octomore, this time the travel retail exclusive 6.2, sample from my great friend Jon (@dvdbloke) from the Scotch and Sci Fi Blog

167PPM and finished in limousin oak this 5 year old dram I am expecting to challenge to my senses.

Wow this is definitely the favourite so far, very drinkable and damn it works well, the citrus fruits are a fresh challenge and I loved the notes from them, I really wish I'd got a bottle of this.

Thanks again to Jon (@dvdbloke) for the sample.

Creamy and sweet, there's peat smoke yes but it's like smoked passion fruit and seaweed, it shouldn't work but it does, there's citrus sweetness and lots of briney seaweed and salty seaside chips, along with earthy honey roast vegetables, very much enticing.

The smoke and wood spice come through strongly at the beginning here, before more honey roast chalky vegetables, sweet carrots, parsnips, then those citrus notes of orange peel and passion fruit sauce, lovely

Sweet passion fruit, woody and salty smoke

Bottle Name: Octomore 6.2
Age: 5
ABV: 58.20

Octomore 6.3

Octomore 6.3 Another Octomore, this time the 2009 distilled Islay Barley Peated to a whopping 258PPM.

I've been really enjoying going through these seriously Peated drams and this is not different with lots of peaty goodness.

Octomore is a huge dram that doesn't pull and punches, it's tasty but very very powerful too lots of lemon and lemongrass notes along with that lovely heather and bracken vegetal note, lovely stuff.

Thanks to Bruichladdich for the official sample.

The big hit of powerful lemongrass filled vanilla and cream smoke with a chalky undertone, then salty sea weed, crunchy green apples, gentle smouldering purple heather and bracken

Huge lemon waxy char and smoke with a lovely chewy thick mouthfeel, vanilla cream and salty chips come next, then that purple heather comes in next.

Sweet tangy lemon waxy smoke, oak and wood char,

Octomore 7.2

Octomore 7.2 Peated to 208PPM this was initially matured in American Oak then in casks which previously held Syrah wine.

Another wow moment with the powerful smoke, but lots and lots of red berry sweetness, this is deliciously yummy, but very very powerful also, a really interesting dram that might have edged it to my favourite octomore.

Thanks to Bruichladdich for the official sample.

That sweet earthy smoky peat comes in then hints of burnt white bread toast and sweet dark fruits mixing with tannic wine notes, deep and rich vanilla, red currants and tangy red berry sorbet, creamy and buttery and wood smoke smattering so in the background.

Wood smoke and spices, dark fruits and red berries and tangy sweet and drying berries, creamy and oily, full of berries and malty biscuits with vanilla Angel delight

Sweet tangy red berries

Octomore 7.3

Octomore 7.3 The most recent Octomore release from Bruichladdich is this Islay Barley 7.3 Peated to 169PPM.

I'm really excited to try this, I really enjoy islay barley drams from Bruichladdich and this is going to be no different.

Hugely powerful lots of heather smoke, sweetness and hay, hints of tinned fruits, a very very nice dram.

This is cracking, not quite my favourite, as I really like the sweetness of some of the others, but a fabulous dram I would happily have over and over again.

Thanks to Bruichladdich for the official sample.

Light popcorn notes with a fresh chalky smoke, there's heathery smoke and honey roast vegetables, it's really creamy, hints of farmyard hay, almost enough to make you sneeze, then sweet fruitiness that comes in with tinned fruit salad and a hint of crushed pears.

Sweet and smoky, the peat hits home hard, there's a malty, hay, farmyard, lovely sweetness, but it's big and powerful heather honey smoke, hints of fresh fruit and a tang of pepper

Tangy and peppery, heather smoke, powerful, and long lasting.
