Big Peat Knows How to Do Christmas

Big Peat Christmas 2014At Christmas when it's cold and wintery outside there's nothing better than a lovely smoky dram to take away the dreary weather and Big Peat is an exceptional choice for this.

He also does a special edition every Christmas since 2011 and i thought it was about time i round up my reviews of these drams.

Every year the labels are different so you can see below which year is which and i really do think i prefer the labels on the 2011 and 2014 bottles best, maybe a return of the Christmas tree next year would sway it for me???

Of the 4 my favourite is split between the 2013 and 2014 versions which are very creamy and buttery, the 2014 probably just edges it but i'd certainly not refuse any of them.

Pop over to The Whisky Exchange and get a bottle for yourself to see just how good this dram is

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2011 (Douglas Laing)

Big Peat Christmas 2011I managed to miss this dram but luckily my good friend Steve (@steveprentice) from Somerset Whisky Blog had a bottle and sent me a dram of it.

Much smokier and drier than the more recent editions but fabulous nonetheless this is tangy, spicy, smoky and filled with doughy bready notes.

Gone completely so really unless you manage to grab one at an auction you will struggle to get this one.

Gentle earthy creamy melted butter and cedarwood smouldering smoke comes first then gentle sweet oak and hints of bbq sauce and crispy bacon on floury soft white rolls

Sweet and creamy initially then smoked honey roast root vegetables with floury doughy bread rolls with hints of lemongrass and bitter spiced blood oranges

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2012 (Douglas Laing)

ig Peat at Christmas I was lucky enough to sample this Christmas Cask Strength edition of Big Peat at this years Whisky fringe and really enjoyed it.

It has some tannic notes that i'm not brilliantly keen on but the smoke is lovely and the strength adds to the flavours and works really well.

A better dram than the standard Big Peat in my opinion.

Not the easiest to find a bottle of this although you can get one at The Whisky Exchange

smoky and winey almost metallic red wine, almost overpowers the smoke for me, some blackcurrent cordial there too

fresh and smoky, not so much wine notes, definite blackcurrent cordial and crushed grape juice

smoky and smooth

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2013 (Douglas Laing)

Big Peat Christmas 2013I loved this dram so much when it came out that i bought 2 bottles and still have around 1/2 a bottle left.

This 2013 Christmas edition is creamy and smoky and has that maritime, seafoody note that comes from Islay that really works well in this dram.

unfortunately sold out everywhere i could check so if you find one buy it, it's fabulous.

Seriously creamy and buttery with smoked kippers and brandy butter lemongrass and oak with bacon rolls and b&w Chinese ribs hiding in the background

Creamy and buttery with cigar ash and Cullen skink soup with that smoked fish veg and cream

Sweet and ashy

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2014 (Douglas Laing)

Big Peat Xmas 2014Big Peat from Douglas Laing is a really well known Islay blended malt which has now been releasing an annual Christmas Limited run for a few years and this is the 2014 version.

Notes from tasting during my visit to their Glasgow headquarters this is a creamy, sweet, smoky, indulgent dessert of a dram that would go fabulous with some chocolate vienetta or just with your feet up after a mountain of Turkey.

This will sell out quickly so fire across to Master of Malt and get yourself one for Christmas now.

Initially a really creamy buttery smoke infused dessert with creamy fruitiness like those fruit and angel delight desserts some fireside ash and cedarwood smoke

Honey and vanilla with creamy gentle fresh angel delight infused with cedarwood and earthy smoke

Sweet, creamy, smoky, yum
