How The SMWS Made Me Wish I Was Still 25

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyThese two The Scotch Malt Whisky Society distillery bottles come from distillery number 25 which was mothballed in 1993.

I turned 25 in 1990 and really wish i was that age again to be able to pick up more of this fabulous whisky without the sometimes silly prices being asked for it now, thank goodness The Scotch Malt Whisky Society still maintain a reasonable price for their bottlings, almost half what the latest official release was.

There's a family connection also as my wife's Aunt used to work as this distillery and i really have been bugging her to let me try some of the unopened bottles she has lying around.

A typical lowlander with fruit and floral notes, it's a real travesty that this distillery closed as pretty much every whisky writer has described this distillery as the best lowland dram and many as in the top 5 distilleries of all time.

SMWS 25.61 Lemon and Vanilla Delicacy

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyThis The Scotch Malt Whisky Society dram of 25.61 Lemon and Vanilla Delicacy I am able to sample as it was sent to me by the #whiskyfabric Queen herself Johanne McInnes (@whiskylassie) who's musings and whealth of knowledge are shared at the WhiskyLassie Blog.

This is a great example from this distillery, and really shows off the lemon sweetness and floral nature of this lowland dram. I have a real love for this distillery and this dram is another example why.

There's a distinctive distillery character note here of waxy pickled lemons rolled in vanilla sugar then hints of crushed flowers with carnations being the main one some floral gums too

Sweet and floral initially then the vanilla sugar ... Made the proper way with a split vanilla pod left to sit for a number of weeks in sugar, then waxy lemons yum

Sweet and sugary with a twist of bitter lemon juice

SMWS 25.69 Fresh Faced and Fabulous

The Scotch Malt Whisky SocietyThis The Scotch Malt Whisky Society 25.69 Fresh Faced and Fabulous unfortunatly sold out before i managed to purchase a bottle, but with only 35 bottles available from this cask that is no surprise.

Amazingly exclusive and one of the best examples of this distillery i'm so glad it was on the bar at Queen St to enable me to have a dram and see just how good it is. Gutted that i missed it but know that every outturn there will be more drams from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society that i really want to buy.
