The Douglas Laing Tasting Room

Port Ellen 31 Year Old Back in April 2014 Neil (@neilmackinnon1) and I were invited to pay a wee visit to Douglas Laing HQ in Glasgow.

Having been before we were never going to say no and popped along for a, very, long afternoon of whisky and putting the world to rights with Douglas Laing ambassador and all round top bloke Jan (@whiskyjan).

The tasting/sampling room at Douglas Laing which sits on the top floor and has a fabulous overview of Glasgow City Centre and beyond is the perfect place to sit back inthe comfy leather sofa's and sip on some of the best whiskies available anywhere.

Fred, Jan, Cara, Chris and the rest of the team at Douglas Laing are doing a brilliant job of selecting, picking, blending and enjoying some utterly brilliant drams and their generosity is second to none. I've yet to come across a Douglas Laing bottling that didn't tickly my fancy in one way or another and I can't wait to see what else lies in store for the years to come.

Neil (@neilmackinnon1) and I would like to express our thanks once again to Douglas Laing for having us over at their HQ and to Jan (@whiskyjan) for taking us through the whiskies.

Aultmore 5 Year Old Prevenance (Douglas Laing)

Aultmore 5 year old This Aultmore 5 Year Old Prevenance was tasted back in April 2014 on a visit to Douglas Laing HQ in Glasgow.

I'm pretty sure this is the final bottling of a wee secret bottle that Cara had let me try before, all i know is that at 5 year old and 50% abv this is a beast of a whisky with huge amounts of flavour and a real poke in the eye to those who say young whisky isnt good, it's also a great example of why even with young ages people are more willing that those with no age statement.

this limited release to celebrate the 1,000 bottling from Douglas Laing is available to buy from Master of Malt

Thanks again to Douglas Laing for having us over at their HQ and to Jan (@whiskyjan) for taking us through the whiskies.

OMFG this is huge, theres a massive sherry covered sticky toffee pudding note that begins here and continues to get sweeter with demarera sugar and mollases before calming and adding mixed nuts and dried fruits

sweet sticky toffee pudding and light demerera sugar with hints of madagascan vanilla and creme brule

sugary sweet

Bowmore 25 year Old This Bowmore 25 Year Old, Old Particular was tasted back in April 2014 on a visit to Douglas Laing HQ in Glasgow.

This is a bit special, it's got hints of Parma violets (which will cause cries of FWP from some) but i loved them as a kid and still do so it just makes me think of the chalky little sweets.

Again the 70cl seems to be gone but a few 3cl samples are still about at Master of Malt

Thanks again to Douglas Laing for having us over at their HQ and to Jan (@whiskyjan) for taking us through the whiskies.

Parma Voilets take me back to my youth with edges of highland heather and sugar mixing with gentle edges of cedarwood smoke, very yummy

chalky with more parma violet sweets, almost has a similar consistency, this is right up my street

sweet, chalky, yummy

It's always good to start a tasting with a cracker of a Grain whisky and this is definitely a cracker of a grain whisky, light floral and fruity, what else could you ask for.

Neil (@NeilMacKinnon1) liked this one so much he went out and bought a bottle the next week.

You might be able to pick one up at a specialists who still have it in stock or you could grab a sample from Master of Malt.

Port Ellen 30 Year Old (Douglas Laing)

Port Ellen 30 Year Old This Port Ellen 30 Year Old was tasted back in April 2014 on a visit to Douglas Laing HQ in Glasgow.

getting to try one Port Ellen was lucky, getting to try 2 was just outstanding, this time from an ex sherry cask, this really works well and i think it was my favourite of the two, Neil (@neilmackinnon1) was also in heaven with these two drams.

I'm not sure which bottling this became and the ABV is a guestimate but oh my the Port Ellen drams that Douglas Laing have squirred away will only get better from here.

Thanks again to Douglas Laing for having us over at their HQ and to Jan (@whiskyjan) for taking us through the whiskies.

Hiding in here is the typical edinburgh rock note that i get mixed with some lovely sweet smoke and sherry covered fruits, lots or real treacley goodness in here with dried fruits sneaking up at the end

Port Ellen 31 Year Old, Old Particular (Douglas Laing)

Port Ellen 31 Year Old This Port Ellen 31 Year Old, Old Particular was tasted back in April 2014 on a visit to Douglas Laing HQ in Glasgow.

OH MY GOD I've died and went to Heaven as this was the first of 2 different Port Ellen whiskies that we tried, this one from a refill ex bourbon hoggie.

These have pretty much all been snapped up by collectors and those who know a good dram when they see one, and this is a damn good dram, if you see it, buy it, and then drink it, it's sublime.

Thanks again to Douglas Laing for having us over at their HQ and to Jan (@whiskyjan) for taking us through the whiskies.

the first notes that tickle the nose are smoky, but it's more an ashy note from a good cigar than a poor cigarette, then it becomes quite sweet with almost a tar like quality and mixing with some treacle is a chalky note that i always seem to get with Port Ellen that reminds me of Edinburgh Rock

So easy to drink, very dangerous really considering the price per bottle, and sweet with gentle smoke mixing with treacle scones and edinburgh rock

mouth watering, makes you want to drink more of it.

This is such as easy and gentle nose, lots of very light floral notes or carnations along with a touch of something lactic, a lovely gentle cheddar, rather than anything else, hints of madagascan vanilla round off the nose
