Glenrothes Vintages Tweet Tasting
Another cracking Twitter Tasting, this time I was invited in by Amanda from The Whisky Lounge to a Glenrothes Vintages Twitter Tasting.
Other than the Select Reserve I've not had a huge amount of dealings with Glenrothes so i was really looking forward to this.
This was the first of the Glenrothes bottles which were bottled as a "vintage" originally the 1995 was meant to be first but wasn't quite ready, I really loved the initial nose from this dram and it didnt disappoint from there.
|Bottle Name||Glenrothes 1998|
|Nose||From the minute i opened the sample bottle i was getting some lovely syrupy sweet notes surrounding me, some definite dried fruit sherry notes in here which mix with the syrup and some added fresh vanilla pod. Given a little time it opens up with some tropical dried pineapple and like a tin of peaches in syrup. There's a touch of chocolate in here also when left for 15/20 mins in the glass.|
|Taste||The palate is sweet fruit like the fruit salad sweets i used to eat as a kid and more of the syrup, also has a touch of white wine to it,|
|Finish||Has a bit of heat in it, like the kick from cinnamon on a home made apple pie.|
This was the original vintage which Glenrothes wanted to release but they waited a little while and released the 1998 instead, that wait really paid off and this is a fantastically rounded dram and one i'd happily keep going back to for more.
|Bottle Name||Glenrothes 1995|
|Nose||Lovely toffee apple notes, reminds me of halloween, theres a touch of puff candy and undercooked pastry, an extra whiff of cheerios and more of the bramley apples, little touch of wax furniture polish.|
|Taste||more of a floral gummyness with apple and spices, maybe cinnamon, quite subtle but with a real spice kick, opens out to some apple strudel|
|Finish||quite soft on the finish but very drying and a little tannic|
The eldest of the whiskies we were sampling tonight and one that i really really need to buy a bottle of, this stuff is fantastic and just suits my personal style of whisky perfectly.
|Bottle Name||Glenrothes 1988|
|Nose||An initial hit of bees wax and furniture polish fall off to banoffee pie, undercooked pastry, summer berries and some light sawdust a little touch of dusty leather book jacket and cranberry fruit tea|
|Taste||Sweet and Spicy, the spicy kick is like clove, cinnamon and demerera sugar topped bramley apples.|
|Finish||a little tannin drying but sweet and appley too|
An amazing night in great company and i'd certainly recommend that you try each and every one of these Glenrothes expressions and any others you can get your hands on.
